Using craigslist to look for jobs is becoming very common. I myself have used it from time to time to see what kind of jobs are available.
I want to warn anyone that is using it or plans to use it, BE CAREFUL WHO YOU SEND YOUR DETAILED RESUME TO.
While I was using it I came up with a few tips that I use to navigate the wild wild web with more precaution.
- Create a version of your main resume that is less detailed to send to jobs that you think look good, but still not sure who is behind the post.
- Only deal with companies who fully Identify themselves - I noticed some companies do not give much information about who they are or ways of contacting them besides the anonymous remailer. I would not send these listings any personal info, except maybe a first name and phone number or maybe just email.
- Create a PDF file with the cover letter and resume in it as one multiple page document or two PDFs - This makes the info slightly less easy to stack into a database.
- NEVER send a .doc file to another person. This is a source format file for Microsoft Office and should be retained only by you. Outputting this file as a PDF is most recommended and makes the file harder to edit, since PDF is meant to be an end-format ready to view digitally and print as good or better than MS Word .doc format.
